First of the season, fresh strawberries and extra thick cream (saves having to whip it). Added a tiny bit of sweetener on to the strawberries. I have one that doesn’t have a bitter aftertaste.
When I was young we used to go and pick our own strawberries. You would spend ages in a field searching under leaves to find the berries. Often they were padded underneath the plants with straw to keep the berries from trailing on the ground. I think that’s where they got their name? Summer days when most of the strawberries missed the punnet and fell into our mouths instead. When music by the beatles played out of little transistor radios.
And when we got home? Strawberries with either single cream and white sugar. Or if we hadn’t got cream in, evapourated milk… Heaven…

Yummy.
I heard that our strawberry growers are desperate for paid pickers now and definitely over the new fees weeks. They usually rely on backpackers but because of the Covid-19 that is not happening this season year. There is extremely high unemployment here but the unemployed don’t want to get off the couch and help harvest fruit and vegetables.

Same here I’m afraid, the government tried to encourage people but the job isn’t that simple and people need some training. Plus they don’t get paid that much. This is the trouble….

Harvest workers here in Australia get paid a minimal wage of about $21.60 per hour. I know of retired pensioners that go fruit and vegetable picking while on gray nomad travel around Australia. The government here are generous to the unemployed and now many are too lazy to work.

Oh dear! Still they would need training. A farmer was saying how the workers have to have some basic skill sets…
