What was the best compliment you’ve received?

Years ago, I was in my twenties, my friend and I were staying somewhere on a residential course. She was a musician and there was a piano in lounge of the house we were staying in. I asked if I could try singing something (it was before I had singing lessons).

I’d just finished singing ‘Over the Rainbow’ and a man came in. He looked at us both and said to my friend ‘you have a lovely voice’ . To which she replied that it was me that had been singing! Then the man said something like ‘was that YOU singing?’ I think he was surprised because I wasn’t pretty and I had big glasses and probably didn’t look like a singer (what do they look like?). He said ‘you were very good’ again and left! I take that as a big compliment even if it was a bit strange…

  1. I’ve experienced this kind of gorgeous remark after thinking I was singing without an audience too. I absolutely love singing, and it’s something I’ve done my whole life, but never really believed I had TRUE talent. This didn’t matter, singing was just so enjoyable and liberating that even if I sounded terrible, I’d practice until I didn’t.

    Quite a few people have told me ‘you have an amazing voice’, and I feel so uplifting to hear this, but never truly quite believe them.

    I’m learning to sing more openly, and with the necessary confidence to enable my lungs to expand properly rather than everything seizing up in anxiety.

    Then suddenly, you have one of those moments when you realise the compliments might have been true after all. And that moment is a song all in itself!

      1. I am planning to do exactly just that! When I lived in Sheffield, I was a member of an amazing choir called ‘Purple Cats’ and it literally had about 100 members at least, we sang inside a church so the union of voices projecting sound into the shape of that space was profoundly beautiful!

        I’m in a different area now, but I’ve already got eyes on a similar looking one here, so I’m going for it as soon as I’m settled into my new home and out of hospital! Which should be tomorrow, as it goes!
