We don’t need a starter motor! Our mechanic found out it was a loose connection and the motor was not earthed to the car body. We still need a gasket (ordered) some oil and a battery but hopefully it won’t be as costly as we thought. Its been a bit of a nightmare, especially since the car is so old, but it has been very reliable so I don’t mind spending a bit more money on it. Goodness knows what I will do if we have to get an electric car. I might have to buy an old, battery driven milk float! I think that’s all I can afford.

My car is having some welding done after someone about six weeks ago. There us now a rusty hole in the wing. I’m not happy, but the person drove off and didn’t leave a note to say that they had hit me! It’s not worth claiming off the insurance as I wouldn’t be surprised if they said its not worth repairing! It’s an old car, but it runs well. The emissions are good, and think of the resources it would take to make a new one? Then in a few years time all cars in the UK will have to be electric. Which is difficult if you live in a terraced house with no driveway. How will they retrofit charging points? Maybe they should use all the plastic in the oceans to make the body panels or the interior lastic fittings? Recycle and reuse should be our constant motto.

In the meantime I will keep running my old car….

Motors on bikes

In the 1940’s and 50’s people started to motorise bicycles, This is an Auto cycle. Similar to how electrobikes are becoming popular today. The motor on this bike is mounted above the front wheel and runs on the tyre. There seems to be a hub brake at the centre of the wheel and what looks like a light that is running off the dynamo effect of the motor. Apparently it was a 50cc engine and ran on a 26:1 ratio of petrol to oil. I didn’t find out much more as I was looking at this picture upside down and couldn’t see the writing about it. These motorised bicycles then turned into mopeds in later years. The book isn’t my hubby’s. I think it’s called the History of Motorcycles, and also had details of many motorbikes including ones such as the Vincent Blackshadow and the Brough Superior which T E Laurence (Laurence of Arabia) was riding when he died in a motorbike accident.
